　　周进的人物形象
　　周进和范进一样是腐儒的典型，是一个漫画式的人物。周进应考至六十岁，仍是童生，只好以教书糊口。小说让其遭受新进的秀才与举人两度奚落，使其强烈感受科举功名成否的天壤之别。后来，他村塾先生的饭碗也因不懂承谢而被夺取，只好为做生意的舅子记账，去了省城。接着通过动作描写，周进在梦寐以求的贡院考房，见两块号板摆的整整齐齐，不觉眼里酸酸的，长叹一声，一头撞在号板上，直僵僵不省人事。把老童生内心酸苦绝望与希望倾泻无遗。
　　后来，事情却发生了喜剧性的突变，竟然中了举人进士！成了人上之人！当年当塾师的薛家集也供起了他的长生禄位！作者设置了让周进看见贡院的号板而撞到的情节和细节，是对热衷功名者的讽刺。文中描绘了命运相似的二进，并用周进提拔了范进，昏朽的二进竟然名进，而且姓周姓范，周有方正，范为范式的意思，这就是鲁迅说的婉而多讽了。二进的此前的黜落与此刻的高中，毫无丝毫的必然，而纯粹是考官喜恶的偶然；是荐场的功用！而考取功名之后际遇的巨大反差，尤其讽刺了科举制度的荒诞一悖谬。文章一开始通过二进的悲喜剧，写出了科举时代的社会环境，怎样引诱和逼迫读书人落入统治者的圈套，丧失了是非观念，陷入麻木不仁的状态而不自知。
　　周进人物经历
　　刚出场时，周进已经六十多岁，依然是个老童生。在汶上县做了三年西席，学生顾小舍人都进学成了秀才，他再无资格继续教下去，沦落到薛家集观音庵私塾中来坐馆糊口，饱受秀才梅玖和举人王进的嘲弄和冷遇。
　　不久，周进丢了饭碗，只好替一伙商人当帐房。可以说，已到了科场梦醒之时。然而，当他进省城路过贡院的时候，他多年的心结却又被触动了。但他是童生，他是不能进入贡院的，看门人的鞭子将他打了出来。
　　想象周进无助地站在贡院冷冷的门外，世界对他而言真的是一无所有了。
　　当他恳求别人带他参观贡院时，大半生追求功名富贵却求之不得的辛酸悲苦，以及所忍受的侮辱欺凌一下子倾泻出来，周进的人生也一举进入高潮：
　　周进一进了号，见两块号板摆的齐齐整整，不觉眼睛里一阵酸酸的，不知道是悲从中来的发泄，还是灵光乍现的奋力一搏，周进一头撞在号板上，直僵僵不省人事。他苏醒后满地打滚，放声大哭。几个商人得知原委，答应每人拿出几十两银子，让他纳监进场。
　　周进道：若得如此，便是重生父母，我周进变驴变马也要报效！爬到地下就磕了几个头。众人还下礼去。金有余也称谢了众人。又吃了几碗茶，周进再不哭了，同众人说说笑笑回到行里。
　　几个商人帮助周进捐了个监生。
　　不久，周进凭着监生的资格竟考中了举人。顷刻之间，不是亲的也来认亲，不是朋友的也来认做朋友，连他教过书的学堂居然也供奉起了周太老爷的长生牌。过了几年，他又中了进士，升为御史，被指派为广东学道。在广州，周进发现了范进。为了照顾这个54岁的老童生，他把范进的卷子反复看了三遍，终于发现那是一字一珠的天地间最好的文章，于是将范进取为秀才。
