　　儒林外史牛浦是怎样的人
　　绍兴人牛布衣来到芜湖，他借居在甘露庵，与庵里的老和尚很谈得来。不想一日，牛布衣病倒，医治无效死了。根据牛布衣的遗嘱，老和尚买了棺材，停柩在柴房。牛布衣是位交友甚广的诗人，他写了两本与官员交往的有关的诗集。临死前，牛布衣将两本诗集托付老和尚保管。这两本诗集，被在庵里读书香烛店的伙计牛浦偷去了。
　　得到诗集的牛浦，他发觉牛布衣是位非凡人士，是位很受学子、举人、官员敬重的名士。牛浦就冒名为牛布衣，他想利用牛布衣的名望，并不要进学、中举，可以同那些官员老爷们往来。
　　冒名牛布衣后，牛浦还真的哄骗了不少人。刻图书的郭铁笔，先被糊住了，他以为牛浦就是牛布衣，敬仰寒暄一番。已经受职县令的董孝廉，路过芜湖时，还专程登门拜访了牛浦，他也认为牛浦是牛布衣。
　　有了牛布衣的名号，牛浦就开始出门寻些好处。牛浦得罪了舅丈人卜信，他赌气离开了家。当得知董孝廉成了淮安府安东县的知县，牛浦就乘船寻这位董知县。在船上，牛浦遇到了牛玉圃。牛玉圃认作牛浦为自己的叔侄，二人来到了扬州。
　　牛玉圃是个低俗爱吹牛的人，他结交好友的王义安估计也是位爱吹嘘的主。不然，在大观楼，有两个秀才把王义安骂作乌龟，还痛打一顿。挨了打，王义安磕头如蒜，还拿出银子送与那两个秀才做好看钱。可以看出，方才，牛玉圃与王义安说的二人同在九门提督共事，是他们的相互吹捧。不然，如果王义安真的是九门提督府出来的人，他不会混的这么悲惨，无缘无故的被人暴打和勒索。
　　回到扬州，牛玉圃拜访东家万雪斋，他吹嘘自己名气太大，在京城求他写字、作诗的人很多。牛玉圃的强势，使得牛浦显得猥琐渺小。本来就没啥真本事的牛浦，遇到牛玉圃是他的幸运，出门在外的，他有人关照有口饭吃了。
　　牛浦受托到苏州买雪虾蟆，临行前，他给牛玉圃说句不合适的话。过后，牛玉圃醒悟，他翻脸无情，追到苏州将牛浦衣裳剥尽，臭打一顿，扔到岸上粪窑子边，扯起帆蓬走了。
　　被人救了的牛浦来到了安东县，拜董知县。随后，牛浦常与董知县来往，他得到了同行的黄客人的敬重。黄客人招牛浦做了女婿。
　　这牛浦也真够无耻的，他在芜湖家中，不久前娶了卜家姑娘为妻。这边到了安东县，又恬不知耻的娶了黄家姑娘为妻。自己已经有了妻室，本可以直言拒绝黄客人的美意。牛浦为了自己好在安东县混，也就顺水推舟的入赘了。
　　不过，做过牛浦荒唐事的，还有那位枪手匡超人。匡超人也是娶了妻的，因为潘三爷案发，他逃难到了京师，投靠李给谏。然后，匡超人招赘到李给谏家，做了外甥女婿。
　　牛浦另娶妻室的事情，并非无人知晓底细。一个芜湖县的无赖石老鼠知道底细后，他与牛浦扭打到县衙门口，要告官。衙役们以为石老鼠向牛浦借路费，就垫了几百文钱将石老鼠打发走了。其后，真的牛布衣的老婆牛奶奶来寻人，认为牛布衣被牛浦谋杀了，要打人命官司。新任安东县令向知县以同名同姓误认的缘由，派两个衙役将牛奶奶解望绍兴去了。牛浦方才从案子中脱身。
　　总体看来，牛浦不过是一个有奶就是娘的小混混。那里有靠山，他就倒向那里。谁给他好处，他就不问原因后果的接受了。好在牛浦混的目的，他是为了生活的好一些。他虽贫穷，但不贪财。牛浦没有拿了牛玉圃的银子跑了，而真的到苏州药店等着买雪虾蟆。比起严贡生、晋爵，牛浦还算行为好一些的。牛浦也没什么特别光鲜的表现，他只是借着牛布衣、董知县的名声，插科打诨的讨人喜欢，庸碌无为的小混混。
