儒林外史中汤知县人物形象和性格特点分析

　　儒林外史汤知县是个怎样的人
　　范进为母操办丧事，费用不足，他向举人张静斋寻求帮助。张静斋就和范进一起到高要县，找汤知县打秋风寻求赞助。在县衙酒宴上，范进的先母见背，遵制丁忧孝子表现，深深地感动了汤知县。
　　汤知县正在为一起案子发愁，因为他收受了几个回族教亲委托一位老师夫行贿的五十斤牛肉，事后不知道如何断案。张静斋举例了刘基因收受贿赂，恰好被朱元璋微服私访查到。刘基被贬，后被毒死的故事。张静斋如此说，是为建议汤知县秉公断案，不要贪图几十斤牛肉而误了前程。
　　刘基刘伯温是否真的收受贿赂，被朱元璋查到，而后遭贬毒死。这些，应该是张静斋道听途说的，没有历史依据的。历史上，刘基跟随朱元璋打天下，成为开国元勋。大明建国后，刘基深知良鸟尽，刀弓藏，兔死狗烹的历史古训，他告老还乡了。后因为朱元璋猜忌，刘基病重时被御医施慢性毒药而死。张静斋的所谓收受贿赂被贬毒死的言论，纯属污蔑刘基。
　　牛肉不能收，汤知县问如何发落行贿者时，张静斋出了个将老师夫套枷后，将那五十斤牛肉堆在枷上，游街示众的馊主意。这样，好向民众表示汤知县如何如何的清廉。
　　汤知县也是混蛋，张静斋出的是这什么好主意。如若向民众表白自己清廉，你把牛肉退回，公正断案就行了。而此刻，汤知县头脑发热，竟然同意实施张静斋的所为好主意。许是老师夫年岁大了，经不起折腾，套枷的第三天，死了。
　　闹出了人命，县城的回子们不干了，他们闹到县衙门前，要打死出主意的张静斋。这时候，汤知县脑袋方才略感清醒些。范进、张静斋顾不上打秋风讨赞助了，二人被系下城墙，换了装，忙忙如丧家之狗，急急如漏网之鱼，连夜找路跑回省城去了。
　　后来，汤知县到按察使那里请罪。那知按察使非但不追究汤知县草菅人命之最，反而安抚一番，只是责怪汤知县办事鲁莽了。至于闹事的回子们，汤知县抓了五个为头的，依律枷责，镇压一番，草草了事。
　　朝廷派来的按察使和汤知县一个鼻孔出气，不拿人命当回事，只晓得武力镇压。看来，吴敬梓笔下描写的所谓大明（实为大清）朝廷，由上至下，都是挺混不吝的。
　　严贡生与邻居王二，因为一头猪发生争斗。严贡生的几个儿子，将前来说理的王大打了个臭死，腿都打折了。王二到县衙喊冤，汤知县派人缉拿严贡生。严贡生见势不妙，他躲到省城去了。
　　若说，汤知县既可以派人到省城去追捕严贡生，也可以将打人致残的严贡生的几个儿子抓起来。毕竟，严贡生是主凶，他的几个儿子属于帮凶，一样该受到惩处的。汤知县什么都没有做，看出他只是雷声大雨点小的虚张声势，他并非愿意惩罚严贡生的。
　　汤知县的不作为，使得严贡生的兄弟监生严致和有了还手之机。严致和花了几两银子，安抚王家，使其不再告状。然后，他又在衙门使去是几两银子，把官司搞定。
　　从汤知县所断的两个官司来看，汤知县不过是表面上讲求孝道爱民和清廉，实则为做事虚伪的昏官。汤知县的所为，使他有些像《红楼梦》中葫芦僧判断葫芦案的贾雨村。贾雨村惹不起薛家，汤知县暗中袒护在高要县很有些势力的严贡生，结局都是被告方使些银子，草草了案。二者异曲同工，很有玩味儿。
