　　笑傲江湖发生在什么时代？
　　《笑傲江湖》毫无疑问发生在明代，以提到武当和张三丰来说，显然是在明朝之后，而《鹿鼎记》中澄观和尚曾想及听说前朝有位令狐冲大侠。既然是前朝，那必然是在清代之前，因此故事只能发生在明朝（13681644）的276年间。
　　这个年限还可以再压缩很多。《笑傲江湖》中提到任盈盈向武当归还八十余年前日月教攻打武当所抢夺的张三丰所传真武剑和《太极拳经》，说明八十余年前张三丰已经不在世。张三丰在《倚天屠龙记》结束时（1358年）还健在无恙。那么八十余年之后，即故事发生的主体年份至少当在1440年后了。考虑到日月神教攻打武当必然还和明教时代有一定差距，故事发生的时代至少还要向后推一二十年，到1450年左右才有可能。
