儒林外史中余有达余有重兄弟的人物形象分析

　　余大先生，名特，字有达；余二先生，名持，字有重。在泰伯祠大祭后才出场的文士当中，这两兄弟，尤其是为兄的余大先生，可算是很有个性的人物。余家与天长杜府是表亲，与五河本地的虞家也是表亲，所以杜少卿与虞华轩（名梁）都叫余大先生作表兄。
　　余大先生文名极高，德行又最为人所称道，所以汤镇台看着两个饭桶儿子狗屁不通的作文着急，欲聘明师，萧柏泉便举荐了余大先生。汤镇台固是大喜，怎奈他那不成器的儿子实在不懂规矩（家教不好，汤镇台难辞其咎），去拜先生却不肯写晚生帖，说什么半师半友，只好写个‘同学晚弟’。余大先生有涵养，见了亦不生气，却笑道：老先生大位，公子高才，我老拙无能，岂堪为一日之长？容斟酌再来奉覆罢。次日回拜萧柏泉，则直言汤由非求教之诚，坚辞了汤家的邀请。名不正则言不顺，言不顺则事不成。余大先生为人行事最看重这一点。辞馆这件事不过是见证余大先生性情迂直的事件之一，性质也不甚严重。依着余大先生的脾气，自己受点委屈没什么，倘若有辱名教却是不可忍的。
　　余氏兄弟的故乡，在吴敬梓先生的笔下，最是势利熏心，民风恶赖。余大先生在外游历日久，一回乡便遇到许多令他气愤难平以至迂性呆气大发的事情。唐氏叔侄名利熏心，一中乡试便置天伦于不顾，慌不迭地叙起同年。性情洒脱如虞华轩者，不过视其为鬼话、梦话；既是鬼话、梦话，自然也犯不上与其较真，所以尚能仰天大笑：从古至今也没有这样奇事。余大先生听了，却是气得两脸紫涨，脖子里的筋都耿出来，愤然道：请问人生世上，是祖、父要紧，是科名要紧？既知是祖、父要紧，如何才中了个举人，便丢了天属之亲，叔侄们认起同年同门来？这样得罪名教的话，我一世也不愿意听！
　　余大先生迂直得可爱、可敬（一如迂直得可爱、可敬的马二先生，虽然两个人秉性并不一样），然而也无奈。余氏兄弟二人，品行文章是从古没有的，却不幸生在了说起那人有品行，他就歪着嘴笑；说起前几十年的世家大族，他就鼻子里笑；说那个人会做诗赋古文，他就眉毛都会笑的恶俗地方其实哪里又不恶俗呢？杜少卿不也是在天长那本地方不得开心颜，才听从娄老伯的劝告去了南京？余氏兄弟不结交本县的官长，又与新近暴发的方家、彭家非亲非友，所以亲友们虽不敢轻视，却也不知敬重；只有表弟虞华轩与他们意气相投，诚心邀请余大先生做儿子的业师。虞华轩七八岁上就是个神童（和庄征君一样），二十多岁，学问成了，一切兵、农、礼、乐、工、虞、水、火之事，他提了头就知道尾，文章也是枚、马，诗赋也是李、杜这些通儒学问八股科考固然用不上，虞华轩自己也并不希罕飞黄腾达。用他对余大先生的原话来说，举人、进士，我和表兄两家车载斗量，也不是什么出奇东西。将来小儿在表兄门下，第一要学了表兄的品行，这就受益的多了！然而他们虽然意气相投，却终究拿那些趋炎附势的亲族本家无可奈何。
　　节孝入祠（一个时代有一个时代的现实，不必以今日的价值标准酷评当时的节孝观吧）的日子，两家都有好几位叔祖母、伯母、叔母入祠，本该合族公备祭酌，同到祠门，公服迎接的，然而余氏兄弟与虞华轩各去本家传了一遍，竟无人肯来，倒都去陪祭候送方家老太太入祠，上演了一场锣响鼓鸣、吹打安位、绣衣朱履、觥筹交错的热闹戏高潮是方六老爷典礼未尽便受不得拘束，宽去纱帽圆领，换了方巾便服，阁上廊沿间溜达着，笑容可掬地与卖花牙婆指点江山。气得余大先生道：我们县里，礼义廉耻一总都灭绝了！也因学宫里没有个好官，若是放在南京虞博士那里，这样事如何行的去！后来余大先生也做了学官，就以虞博士为楷模，爱护褒扬有德有才的文士这是后话，此时也只好大家同叹一口气，一同到家，吃了酒，各自散了。
　　对于现实的无奈，余氏兄弟与虞华轩因其秉性不同，采取了不同的应对方式。虞华轩性格洒脱不羁，又守着几亩田园，跑不到别处去，因此就激而为怒，专爱拿那些贪利的田贩子、房牙子开涮，借以开心。虞华轩精心设计，捉弄粗俗、贪鄙、尤其爱吹牛的田贩子成老爹的那段故事，是书中最精彩有趣的情节之一，读来令人捧腹，开心，解气然而痛快过后，又总不免有些落寞：想想虞华轩满腹经纶、大好才华竟无处伸展，只能用来与这些市井无赖、恶俗小人治气，怎不让人由心底里发出一声悲凉之叹！或许也是虞华轩的境界还不够吧，换了杜少卿，大概就不屑于治这份气，只管做自己喜欢的事就是了，所以他有《诗说》传世（可惜现实中吴敬梓先生的《诗说》七卷却都亡佚了）。
　　与外向、傲世的虞华轩不同，余氏兄弟是守着祖宗家训，闭户读书，不讲那些隔壁帐的势利，以内敛、自重的方式固守着自己的一方世界。兄弟二人一般的清心淡泊，有一日本可有三处酒吃，却阴差阳错一处也没吃成，兄弟俩也不懊恼，两个人自嘲着，吃了些小菜晚饭，吃了几杯茶，各自安歇老兄弟俩处事那么合拍、自然，作者也只是淡淡地写来，却极有回味。当然这是极小的事，书中不惜笔墨重点描写的，是余二先生代兄受过替余大先生挡官司和余氏兄弟寻地安葬父母灵柩的事迹。
　　余大先生这场官司，说起来其实有些不大光彩，是他在无为州替一个姓风名影的、官司在身的人说情惹来的。不过那场官司的内情书中并未详叙，既系捕风捉影，想来吴敬梓先生的本意也不在叙述案情，只是借此非常事件才好表现大先生、二先生的兄弟敦谊。说情事泄，捉拿余大先生的关文到了县里，却将大先生的名字错写成了二先生的名字。二先生便将错就错，一边遣人捎书给正在南京杜少卿家做客的大先生，告诉他万万不可回家；一边顶着乡里、亲戚的劝告，挑着关文不符之处委蛇周旋。直到事情不了了之，无为州再不来提了，才放心地约大先生回家。老兄弟俩得以日常相守，同葬父母。书中所写余氏兄弟的兄良弟悌、和睦敦谊，虽然不像虞华轩的意气治恶那么富有戏剧性，却更平实、亲切、感人。
　　四十四回书中迟衡山、杜少卿等人对士君子惑于龙穴、沙水之说，自己心里想要发达，却假孝道之名施行迁葬的贪鄙、虚伪、大逆不道进行了痛快淋漓的批判。而他们所揭露的风水之风盛行之下的种种丑恶世态，就在下一回书中摹绘得活灵活现。余氏兄弟听从迟衡山、杜少卿等人的至理真言，不去理会风水之说，坚持不必讲发富发贵，只要地下干暖，无风无蚁，选定了葬地。也不去理会灵柩抬出门，再要抬进来，就要穷人家的无稽之谈，火灾之后依旧将灵柩请进中堂，择日尽礼出殡归葬。大先生说：我两人葬父母，自然该正正经经的告了庙，备祭辞灵，遍请亲友会葬，岂可如此草率！二先生说：这何消说，如果要穷死，尽是我弟兄两个当灾。言语平淡，却有振聋发聩之效。几百年后的今日，风水之风又开始莫名地盛行，却不闻杜少卿刀斫风水狗头、凌迟忤逆子孙的快语，令人好生寂寞。
　　余氏兄弟有几分虞博士的敦厚，资性中却少一些虞博士那种天怀淡定；虞华轩有几分杜少卿的才情，可惜终是止于意气，没能修炼成真正的豪杰精神。然而他们处在那么乌烟瘴气的恶劣环境中，仍能洁身自好，坚守自己的品行、气节，实在是难得，不愧是儒林中的上品人物。
