　　儒林外史中鲍文卿的主要事迹
　　向知县因为真假牛布衣案件处理的过于草率，被传的上司知道，崔按察负责调查。如果追究下去，查出是牛浦假冒牛布衣，向知县面临着被罢官的险境。正当危机时刻，崔按察的门下戏子鲍文卿出面求情，救了向知县。事后，向知县要酬谢鲍文卿，被鲍文卿婉词拒绝了。
　　鲍文卿回到南京，他遇到修乐器的倪老爹。倪老爹家境贫寒，一个孩子也养活不起。鲍文卿就把倪老爹的儿子倪廷玺过继来，作为自己的儿子，并送了二十两银子给倪老爹。倪廷玺自此改名为鲍廷玺。其后几年，鲍文卿领着戏班子，在南京官宦府内唱戏谋生。
　　一日鲍文卿偶遇升为安庆府知府的向知县，双方之间相互叙旧。安庆府的书办见鲍文卿与像向知府关系不错，他就托鲍文卿办事。如果事情办好，书办要谢鲍文卿五百两银子。鲍文卿见所托之事有损向知府的清名，断然拒绝了。其后，向知府做媒。鲍廷玺娶了府内王总管的女儿。婚后因为难产，鲍廷玺的媳妇死了。
　　向知府升任福建道台，他与鲍文卿父子作别。几个月后，鲍文卿病重亡故。出殡前，登门拜访的向道台题写了铭旌。
　　戏子金次福说和，沈大脚做媒，鲍廷玺娶了归家的姑娘。由于沈大脚假说鲍廷玺是举人，归太太方同意将女儿出嫁。婚后，归太太发觉鲍廷玺不是举人，立刻气的昏死过去。归太太醒来后得了疯病，闹了两年，把鲍廷玺家给折腾穷了。这鲍廷玺也真是的，自己明明是个戏子，何必冒称举人骗婚。
　　鲍廷玺落魄之际，他遇到了在苏州抚院衙门做相公的大哥倪廷珠。倪廷珠资助鲍廷玺了七十多两银子，并帮鲍廷玺预定了一所房子。鲍廷玺的银子快用完了，他到苏州寻找大哥，那知大哥得重病死了。失去依靠的鲍廷玺只好到扬州，去寻找以前自己丈人王总管的孙女婿季苇萧。季苇萧只给了五分银子，托鲍廷玺带封信到南京。
　　回到南京，因为无钱买房，鲍廷玺预定的那套房子也黄了。无处安身的鲍廷玺，只好借了一套房子暂住。为了生活，鲍廷玺只得重新领着戏班子，游走于官府、戏院、文士之间，平淡度过一生。
　　感觉鲍文卿父子还算和善之人，鲍文卿一生淡泊金钱，常做些符合自己道德准则的事。鲍廷玺虽然聪明，但他的运气差一些，只得栖身梨园，接触了许多腐朽的官宦和酸儒文人，情趣低俗许多。
