儒林外史荀玫的主要事迹
科举考试很难。范进考了近三十年，五十四岁才中了秀才。周进快七十了，依靠捐藩库买了个秀才学位，参加录遗，后来才中了举人。范进、周进都是年岁一大把的，大器晚成，方才科举达成。虽然人生的绝大多数时间是在受苦，毕竟范进、周进还是幸运的，他们后来都中进士，成了官宦。然而，他们属于少数者。那些一辈子考不中秀才、举人、进士的，如蒲松龄、孔乙己等的落魄者，占了大多数。
凡事有逆境与顺境之差别。相比较范进、周进的科举坎坷艰辛，少年荀玫的仕途可谓是顺风顺水，一路平川的。
范进中了进士，钦点为山东学道。上任前，他来到提携过自己的恩师周进处询问，自己到山东有没有啥人需要关照的。周进讲到，自己当作馆先生时，家乡有个学生名叫荀玫的，希望范进留意提拔。
秀才中与不中的，学道说了算。如此，给了周进、范进徇私之机。当然，学道的好恶，也是中秀才的原因。马瑞芳教授在《苦行僧蒲松龄》中讲过，蒲松龄写了一篇非八股的文章，得到了学道施润章的赏识，中了秀才第一名。范进写的文章也是得到周进的认可，他才中了秀才。
周进、范进都经历过科举的磨难，他们想利用手中的权力，给荀玫以机会。然时势造英雄，英雄出少年。当范进费力不讨好的找寻荀玫试卷时，方发觉荀玫俨然已经中了秀才。荀玫聪颖过人，他根本就不需要周进与范进的关照。
荀玫的确是有才，他约二十岁中了秀才。次年，约二十一岁中了举人。然后，匆匆进京会试，又中了第三名进士。二十一二岁的，荀玫完成了周进、范进用了大半生走过的路。荀玫科举的科举之顺利，可见非同寻常。倘或蒲松龄有荀玫三分之一的运气，他就可以考中举人的。
仕途虽无高峰，没有做出什么名垂史册的举措，荀玫也是顺利的任完工部主事，转为员外。其后，荀玫做过两淮盐运使的，盐运使在明清相当于三品官，职位不低。而盐务是肥差，荀玫是否清廉为官，像隐士王冕一样的清高，由于吴敬梓没有描写，就不得而知了。想来荀玫应该善始善终的，他被刻画的如此完美，科举和仕途都是一帆风顺的，不会做出令吴敬梓失望的事情来。
