　　中神通王重阳早年学文，后来习武，他纵横江湖，行侠仗义，曾高举义旗与金兵抗争，甚至耗费巨资和人力建造了活死人墓，为起事做准备。抗金失败后，王重阳痛苦不已，隐入活死人墓多年，不肯与金人共青天。无论多少好友劝说游说，王重阳都初心不改，坚决不出古墓，直到死对头林朝英前来叫骂，连续七天七夜终于将王重阳激出，王重阳与林朝英也就此化敌为友，同闯江湖。
　　在相处中，林朝英对王重阳芳心暗许，欲嫁给王重阳为妻，但王重阳装痴卖傻不肯回应林朝英的感情，两人决斗近千回合仍不分胜负。最后王重阳被逼离开了活死人墓，在终南山建立了全真观，出家为道。出家后的王重阳渐渐被道法所感，参透了清净虚无的奥义，并四处传教，建立了全真教。
　　《九阴真经》现世之后，引起武林纷争，中神通王重阳与南帝北丐、东邪西毒等人约定以华山论剑决定《九阴真经》的归属。最终，王重阳力克其他四人获得了《九阴真经》。
