儒林外史市井四奇人人物形象及性格特点分析

　　市井四奇人（季遐年、王太、盖宽、荆元）作为压轴人物，出现在虞博士那一辈人，也有老了的，也有死了的，也有四散去了的，也有闭门不问世事的这样一个时刻。残酷地说，贤人们是全军覆没了。这四奇人是受命于危难之际的中兴大将了。然而环顾神州大地，论出处，不过得手的就是才能，失意的就是愚拙；论豪侠，不过有余的就会奢华，不足的就见萧索。在这斯文扫地的土地上，到处讲究的都是升、迁、调、降的官场，揣合逢迎的考校。作者公正地告诉世人一个怵目惊心又毫不奇怪的事实：那个社会烂掉了。然而作者的人文理想并没有泯灭，于一塌糊涂的沦陷之中，让四奇人横放特出，他们既是贤人薪尽之火传，又有着别一世界的风度，带给人们新的希冀，第一个奇人的命名，即用谐音法暗示出他们是作者的一种希望；季即冀，希望也；遐年，未来岁月也。
　　这四位奇人的身分，是聚讼纷纭的公案。有些人说他们是市民阶级，进一步推论，作家将希望寄托于新兴的市民了。这是一度很兴旺的一种说法。从经济地位看，这四奇人诚然是居于城市的市井细民，但其思想特质、精神风貌却都是知识分子，是穿着工农衣服的知识分子。而且作者还没有阶级论，他关注的焦点是远远大于阶级的道德，而且作者从不仅仅依据身分下判词，胡屠户、匡大都是纯粹的市井细民，他们在行上出了问题，作者便毫不客气地将他们钉上了耻辱柱。也就是说，作者并没有把改革社会的希望寄托于新兴的市民阶层的意思。四奇人也不可能提出改革制度的要求，他们身上还看不到贤人那份古色古香的政治热情，他们只是在人生道路上违背了统治阶级的安排，而且那不可推诿的古已有之的隐士气息还掩抑了他们身上的近代色泽。
　　在他们身上体现了作者对知识分子生活道路的设想。作者深知，原为四民之首，能提携万物的士，沦落为虚妄的漂泊者，甚至堕落而为借宦途以攫取功名利禄的名教罪人，除了政治风气不良、理想的陨落、仅此一条荣身之路的腐蚀这些原因外，主要的是知识分子在经济、在精神上不独立，不可避免的寄生性、依附性扭曲着他们的本性。不能仅单纯地寄希望于精神境界的提高，他们要恢复本性，还必须争取不依靠别人而独立谋生。貌似自律的道德从来都是一层皮，贴在利益和需要之上。晚年过着灌园葆真素生活的吴敬梓，已经悟透了个中道理，借四个奇人表彰出来，以此为社会提供一种健康的心理。
　　季遐年，既以写字为生，又以写字自娱，耿介嵚崎。王太，是个着棋高手，却安于当卖火纸筒子的小贩。开茶馆的盖宽，诗画自娱，由小康堕入贫困，就安于贫困，也不像景兰江那样去附庸风雅，呆气依然不改，犹自对生活保持超然的审美态度，决不撞骗于求虚名污利。末一尤恬淡，居三山街，曰荆元。能弹琴赋诗，缝纫之暇，往往以此自遣（鲁迅《中国小说史略》）。他们与那些本是市侩硬要去邀取高名的自欺欺人之徒正相反，也与那些文人无文的枯木朽株相衬映。作者有深意地进行着错位处理，互反性构成法为小说增添了戏剧化的场景：雅得太俗的景兰江、支剑峰之流留下了永恒的笑柄，文到翰林却质木无文的鲁编修被无情的比较掀露出那开屏后的洞；而不是想做雅人的季遐年、荆元等则显示了倜傥的个性、多才多艺的风采，高雅脱俗，安贫乐道，所以称得上是奇人。
　　作者塑造充满雅人气质的四客，着眼于他们夙有君子之风的一面。刘咸炘的《小说裁论》中有几句至为老到的评语：说四客以为阕音，四客各明一义：季忘势，王率性，盖齐得丧，荆蹈平常。四者合则大贤矣。刘咸炘还基本上准确地揭示了《外史》塑造形象有系列联续性的特点：季类后虞（华轩），王类韦，盖类少卿，荆类果行。但是，他们毕竟又不是贤人，不像贤人那样有忧时救世的社会责任感，毋宁说他们是古之隐士的亚类，隐于市的活神仙。其实，应该说，他们更像杜少卿，他们的风格与少卿颇为相似，都隐括了作者的经历和性情。也就是说，他们是像古今第一奇人的四个小奇人。他们奇，就奇在为自己活着，不为帝王、八股活着，他们摆脱了统治阶级给知识青年安排的学成文武艺，赁与帝王家的道路，无欲则刚，争取到了人格的独立：季遐年迎着脸大骂施御史的孙子：你是何等之人，敢来叫我写字！我又不贪你的钱，又不慕你的势，又不借你的光，你敢叫我写起字来！夸大点说，这是个历史性的反击。不仰人鼻息，便挺直了腰板，终于为读书人吐了口恶气！
　　他们能自食其力，便在那个锢智慧，坏心术，滋游手的社会里，取得了独立自足的人生形式，过着又不贪图人的富贵，又不伺候人的颜色，天不收，地不管的快活生活，一定程度上实现了对文化异化的事实上的克服：告别了奴性人格。仅此一点，对短暂的人生来说，就是很令人欣慰的了。
　　在吴敬梓稍前，蒲公松龄先生朗声宣布：自食其力不为贫，贩花为业不为俗！《聊斋黄英》作为一篇反映作者生活情趣的小说，宣扬着知识分子既要自食其力、发家致富，又要有文人的雅兴、情趣和教养的生活观念。除了聊为我家彭泽解嘲希望发家致富外，高洁、清盈的黄氏姊弟与四奇人的生活方式是一致的。两位伟大的作家共同表达了以自食其力解决生计问题，然后过自以为快的日子这样一种准美学态度的人生哲学，其间有着不可忽视的近代经济因素渗入的作用。
　　荆元他们找到了安身立命的支点，他们可以安之若素了。然而，生命要与群体相涉，自足的理想世界不可能长期存活。人格独立、个性解放的真正实现，还有赖于全社会的改革、进步。全书在荆元的凄清宛转的变徵之音中收束，不但透露了作者的淑世深悲，也写出了奇人只能争取一定程度的内心平静，实际上并无路可走的悲凉心境。作者和他笔下的奇人并不安于以个人为起点又为终点的任性的个性独立，他和他们想与社会历史挂上钩，但只是一厢情愿的苦恋。
　　一代文人的厄运到四奇人这里依然拨动它的生活的颤声。这颤声是对失落了家园的悲悼，他们依然无家可归！他们与开篇的王冕遥相呼应。王冕两次半夜逃走，最后其家是蟏蛸满室，蓬蒿满径，如同大祭后被尘封的泰伯祠。四客的前途也是令人凄然泪下的。作者借王冕隐括全文，添四客述往思来，这个布局像浸透了汁水似的浸透了长篇的悲剧感。隐士、贤人、奇人都不可能改变那个社会，也就不可能真正地主宰自己的命运。隐士只不过是一种自愿的放逐。
　　《外史》用喜剧的笔调、讽刺的态度，暴露了科场、官场、乡场、儒林内外的社会病态，那些东西既不合规律（真），也不合目的（善），只有现存性、没有现实性丧失了存在的必然性、合理性而又勉强存在，伪妄成了他们唯一可能的形式。他们此起彼伏，卖弄着各自的身段与脸谱，组成了喜剧形象世界。《外史》中还有一个悲剧形象世界，这就是作者用悲剧的笔调写出的贤人的风流云散和奇人的梦醒之后无路可走的悲凉。
　　而且，这份悲凉意识正是作者的创作心境，正是作者臧否人物潜在的价值标准，也是《外史》的喜剧深刻别致的原因之一。果戈理说他的作品有个看不见的主人公是笑，《外史》的这个主人公则是哭。没有这个哭，便很难公心讽世，这是被晚清谴责小说验证了的。所谓戚而能谐，婉而多讽，正因为这部喜剧巨著深层的支配性的底色是悲剧。这个悲剧的网在作品中是由文人的沦落、奇人的穷途哭返织成的。
