　　向鼎的被参，其实也是冤案。在前文有关牛浦郎的情节中，作者已借三件官司描写了向鼎的办案精明、断案公正，即使是牛布衣之事，也只能算是无头官司，所以向鼎才含糊结案。因此在向鼎竟因此事获罪时，读者都会感到不平，而鲍文卿于此时出场救助向鼎，则必定会赢得读者好感。
　　从情节上看，向鼎被参，似乎已成定局，因为揭帖稿已经写好，如果上呈了，向鼎肯定会被革职。这时鲍文卿求情，按察司又准其所请，这就使情节向另一面发展，显得曲折多变。
　　此外，这样的出场还充分显示了鲍文卿的性格特征。听到要参处向知县，他马上双膝跪下，向崔按察说道：方才小的看见大老爷要参处的这位是安东县向老爷，这向老爷小的也不曾认得，但这老爷是个大才子、大名士，如今二十多年了，才做得一个知县，好不可怜！而今又要因这事参处了。况他这件事，也还是敬重斯文的意思，不知可以求得大老爷免了他的参处么？鲍文卿虽不认识向鼎，但他知道向鼎是个才子、名士，便起相救之心，所以崔按察才说他倒有爱惜人才的念头。封建社会中戏子不可干政，鲍文卿平时虽恪守朝廷体统，但为了救向鼎，却立即双膝跪下求情，这更说明了他的侠骨热肠；而崔按察本是太监的侄儿，荫袭出身，不懂什么朝廷体统，便同意所请，吩咐幕宾：这安东县不要参了。
　　这位崔按察司不想掩没鲍文卿救助向鼎之情，便差了一个衙役，拿着书子，把鲍文卿送到安东县，想让向鼎谢鲍文卿几百两银子，回家做个本钱。这才引出鲍文卿与向鼎的一段交往。
　　来到安东县，向知县把书子拆开一看，大惊，忙叫开宅门，请这位鲍师父进来，而鲍文卿则是走进宅门，双膝跪下，便叩老爷的头，跪在地下请老爷的安，丝毫不以恩人自居，礼数十分周到；向知县双手来扶，要同他叙礼，他再三不肯；向知县拉他，他断然不敢坐，并说：这个关系朝廷体统，小的断然不敢。只是立着垂手回了几句话，退到廊下去了；向知县托家里亲戚来陪他，他也断不敢当，只有到了管家房里，他才欢喜了、有说有笑；后来向鼎送他五百两银子，他也一厘也不敢收。这段描写，集中体现鲍文卿的知分守礼、恪守规矩。在封建社会里，有所谓的贱辈即倡优皂隶，不但地位低下，受人歧视，而且不允许参加科举考试，演戏的便是所谓的优。所以，鲍文卿再三说小的是何等人、小的乃是贱人，决不肯和官府平起平坐。而向鼎则知恩必报，先是以礼相待，绝不肯因鲍文卿是所谓的贱辈便轻视他，后来又设酒席亲自招待他，可鲍文卿就是不肯，他便把酒席发了下去，叫管家陪他吃了，最后还封了五百两银子谢他。他这样做并不仅仅因鲍文卿是上司衙门里的人，更因为他觉得鲍文卿这个人非同寻常，身虽下贱，却敬重斯文；于人有恩，却不望人报。鲍文卿这种表现在当时社会中也不为一般人所理解，例如崔按察就说他是个呆子，而向鼎却因此才格外敬重他，这正反映了向鼎的为人也不同凡辈。
　　鲍文卿不但救助即将被参的知县向鼎，还尽心尽意地救济倪霜峰的贫困。鲍文卿初遇倪老爹时，只见他头戴破毡帽，身穿一件破黑绸直裰，脚下一双烂红鞋，花白胡须，约有六十多岁的光景，明显是一个穷困潦倒之人。但鲍文卿却不以衣帽取人，对他礼数周到，请他到家里来修乐器。吃过午饭后，到下午请他到酒楼上坐坐。吃酒时，鲍文卿问道：我看老爹像个斯文人，因甚做这修补乐器的事？谁知这一问却使倪霜峰不禁倾诉出满腔酸苦。鲍文卿意识到他必有隐痛，便耐心相劝：老爹，你有甚心事，不妨和在下说，我或者可以替你分忧。并再三强调：我是何等之人，敢笑老爹；老爹只管说。倪老爹被他这一番热诚逼急了，只得告诉他：那四个儿子，我都因为没有吃用，把他们卖在他州外府去了！听到这里，鲍文卿忍不住的眼里流下泪来。当倪霜峰说剩下的一个小儿子将来也要卖时，他又马上想帮忙抚养，但又顾虑到自己的身份，所以欲说又止、吞吞吐吐，但最后同情之心胜过所谓的安分，大胆地说：你老人家若肯不弃贱行，把这小令郎过继与我，我照样送过二十两银子给老爹，我抚养他成人。此举足见其相助之热忱。更为难能可贵的是其子过继以后，平日逢时遇节，仍然可以到老爹家里来，后来老爹事体好了，依旧把他送还老爹。这哪像是过继，简直就是帮倪霜峰抚养儿子并周济他本人了。果然，倪廷玺过继来以后，鲍文卿并不肯叫他学戏，而是送他读了两年书；倪霜峰去世后，鲍文卿又拿出几十两银子来替他料理后事，自己去一连哭了几场，依旧叫儿子去披麻带孝。如此对待倪霜峰，充分显示了鲍文卿诚心助人的古道热肠。
　　鲍文卿的善良、热诚、安分的性格，不但于救助别人时可见，就是在接受别人帮助时也时时显露。向鼎升任安庆知府后让他们父子去安庆。路上，同行的两个书办想用五百两银子让他向向知府说情，鲍文卿拒绝道：须是骨头里挣出来的钱做得肉！你们伏侍太老爷，凡事不可坏了太老爷清名，也要各人保着自己的身家性命。这几句话，虽然很朴实，但义正辞严，说得两个书办毛骨悚然。
　　到安庆后，向知府对他极其优待，但他却从不以曾救助过向鼎自居而处处伸手：向鼎为其子娶媳，他则知感不尽；向鼎请他去巡场查号，他忠于职守。向鼎却也知恩必报，处处照顾他，他生病以后，向鼎送一千两银子让他回家休养；再次路过南京时，又马上便去看望他，谁知他却已病逝，向鼎一直走到柩前，叫道：‘老友文卿’，恸哭了一场，又送银一百两作为助丧之费。凡此，都表现了鲍文卿与向鼎两人的深厚情谊。
　　在匡超人忘恩负义、牛浦郎冒名行骗之后，作者却塑造出鲍文卿这样一个热心助人、正直守分的形象，这无疑具有强烈的对比作用。虽然鲍文卿的形象并不如匡超人、牛浦郎那样鲜明生动，但这却是作者真实思想的流露。作者愤慨于当时上层人物的卑鄙行径，道德败坏，廉耻丧尽。所以极力表彰鲍文卿这个卑贱人物的德行；同时也赞扬了以鲍文卿为风尘知己的向鼎。向鼎就是吴敬梓心目中的理想人物，他和鲍文卿交往具有平等的人与人的相互尊重的高贵品格。自然，鲍文卿的古道热肠虽值得肯定，但他的恪守尊卑则不足赞扬。但吴敬梓对这个人物的刻画却是符合那个时代的卑下人物的性格的。
