儒林外史范进人物形象及性格特点分析

　　范进中举几成了一个典故，范进作为八股腐儒的典范，知名度和被引用率都高得惊人，不但令杜少卿自叹弗如，恐怕也是作者始料不及的。腐是偏词，中心词还是儒。然而，他有足够的腐，却与儒不甚沾边，无论外在的身份特征（中举前是如此，中举后成了官吏，更不见儒风），还是内在精神，既不像宋代的理学家，更不像清初的朴学家。如果说范进是儒，那就是说，儒发生了巨大的历史变迁。整部《外史》中堪称儒者，除了那几位大贤外，就是以个人主义姿态表现儒家本色的杜少卿了。虞博士有点先秦儒风，杜少卿有点唐代儒生味，总体上他们都秉持着为仁由己的儒家的根本精神。至于八股士子、假名士正因为他们败坏了儒家精神才激起了作者的批判冲动。《外史》写了真儒及其亚类奇人的漂泊流浪那个社会已无法吸附此等真才，写了那些不但没达到儒家标准，反而败坏儒风的跳蚤们的无根的浮动、虚妄的窜伏。总而言之，儒不是无法安身，就是因子转移，成了别的品种，儒而不儒，遂有外史。《外史》也确写出了儒的质变。
　　唐宋以前的儒是有侠气的。宋明以后有的士子表现出的正义凛然、不计成败的精神显然与这种侠气一脉相承。明代的李贽极力给疲弱的后儒灌注任侠的精神，直到吴敬梓还用侠气表彰有个性色彩的儒生本色。但这一切似与范进风马牛不相及，因为他不但与侠难以相通，简直与侠正相反：侠勇，他懦；侠强，他弱；侠个性饱满、生气勃勃，他全无个性、尸居余气，何尝一日有过高声；侠威风凛凛，他窝窝囊囊；这样罗列现象可以比个没完。我们绝不是要让范进去当侠客，而只是要说，在这对照之下，我们可以清醒地看出范进离开那有侠气的儒已经多么遥远了，远出了儒家范围，不但不是君子儒，也不是小人儒，而且腐得不像儒了。让孔夫子来辨认，也不会说是他的门徒！面对范进这样的腐物，恐怕老夫子连我播下的是龙种，收获的却是跳蚤这样的关系也不愿意承认的。
　　那么，他是什么呢？他本性迷失的程度真使我们不知道他到底是什么了：中了举是个官，不中举是口痰！稂不稂莠不莠是金有余说他老师周进，然而，周进还常年坐着馆，范进则在中相公前连个馆也未得坐。他中相公后，胡屠户说：明年在我们行事里替你寻一个馆，每年寻几两银子，养活你那老不死的老娘和你老婆是正经！周进到薛家集坐馆还须夏总甲的面子，范进显然只有胡屠户这样一个靠山，而在杀猪行事里寻个馆简直是缘木求鱼罢。对他来说，也似乎用不上什么牺牲品之类的悲壮的形容词，他有什么能拿出来牺牲呢？他既未走在时代的前面，也没有肩负着什么伟岸的历史必然要求，他甚至连个性也牺牲不出，他简直像无机体一样，完全依附于那个社会。八股取士其实正好是他们这号人的依托和救星。他恐怕连八股文那种适合于笨伯的文体也作不好，周进说他的文章好，大有《聊斋司文郎》里所写的味道；至少是充满偶然性的：假如周学道无暇再看第二遍，假如魏好古才思再敏捷些，紧接着范进就交卷，则范进的命运可能还是江山依旧，他的录取最起码是极不严肃的，未期收完卷子就给了范进个第一；而且真好还是假好只有周学道知道，这位学道大人也未必知道好不好，反正衡文大权握在考官之手，士子的命运便成了偶然性的血肉注脚。作者故意特犯，又让范进当学道，去荐拔士子，这显然是对当时文运的夸张性讽刺了：昏庸颟顸如周进、范进，本身腐而不儒，却居然把持着文运，真是海外仙山般的奇伟瑰丽之景观。
　　其实，范进自己也不明白自己是什么。他像一个游魂，漂流在茫茫人海中，岳父不以其为婿，高邻不以其为人。他没有位置，也没有角色意识，以一团昏浊的腐物任凭人们踢来搡去，他似乎既没有生活方式，也没有情感形式，似乎是科举制才赋予了他现实品名，使他成了八股考生直到考八股的学道。而且他中举前后是一色、一致的麻木不仁，当了举人、学道之后，那颗枯死的灵魂也泛不起什么欢乐的涟漪，一如他贫贱、卑微时也无牢骚怨言一样，莫非庄周企慕的那种入火不爇，入水不湿的真人在他身上应了验？看来简陋也能使人坚强，空洞也能使人安详。不信，请看范进。
　　惜乎哉，一声噫！好了！我中了！葬送了范进超凡入圣的前程。中国没有超出规矩的神经病，像徐渭那样的奇人甚少，像西方的哲学疯子更少，倒有不少被规矩压抑成的神经病。范进中举之前就生活在严重的心理障碍中，正是那心理障碍成了他的铠甲，成就了他的承受力，使他安详地耽于一种幻象、安详地聆听着岳丈大人狗血喷头的教训，坚强地连考二十余次，屡败不悔，从容镇定。一元化的价值取向，来自各个层次的催逼压迫，不是个使人失去自由的问题，比这个档次要低得多，是个使人失去活气的问题，个个蒙昧得虽生犹死如范进，则治者的天下便永远太平无事了。范进也有睁开眼看世界时，便是面对连登黄甲的捷报时，两手拍了一下之后的那一声笑，那时他摆脱心理障碍，从尸居余气中复活了，获得了一刹那的清醒，他终于也有了活人的情感波澜。当然，像个二十年没见过阳光的人会晕倒在烈日下，也像一个苦恋了二十年的人突然收到了待月西厢下的柬札而幸福得失控。范进在持续的失败中已将失败当成命定的必然性，中了反而成了巨大打击，类似飞来横祸，他的发疯，只是迷失了惯性，因为他早已没有本性可用来迷失了。不是在他发疯时，而是在他发疯前揭示出多少人性的弱点！那些弱点汇成一个腐字，却脱离了儒的本义，要么就是儒有了新的引申义，甚至可以与腐通假了。
　　若挥洒浅层次的人道主义的感情，则范进之活得窝囊令人同情、悲悯。然而，上帝是让他下来做个人，并不是派他当擦脚的地毯啊。本来天地之大，别有一种活法在，他株守科举、甘心为腐奴，怨谁来？他自然比不了杜少卿，杜少卿是世家子弟，有钱有闲，但他为什么不能像荆元那样自食其力，有自己的内心、情感生活呢？当然，他的智能有问题，但更主要的是他走差道儿了。他白活了一场。
