范进的性格特点大致分为4点：
1、热衷功名：范进穷尽一生的精力于科举考试，虽然屡遭挫败，仍寄望甚深，直到五十四岁才中秀才；后来他打算去应乡试，却被胡屠户奚落，叫他死心，但他宁可让家人挨饿也要再去应考；及至中举，他竟然欢喜得发了疯，这是范进热衷功名的最具体的表现。
2、怯懦麻木：他向胡屠户借盘费，胡屠户用不堪入耳的说话骂他，甚至骂他母亲是老不死的老娘，他也毫不生气，充分表现出范进逆来顺受、怯懦麻木的性格。
3、迂腐无能：家里穷得无饭吃，范进手足无措，要等母亲吩咐，才慌忙出去卖鸡，可是他在集上一踱一步，东张西望，老半天仍未能把鸡卖出，证明他平日只埋首读书，缺乏谋生技能。
4、虚伪奸诈：从范进中举后，张乡绅的到来，并赤裸裸的和范进套关系，以求日后互相帮助和范进假惺惺的推辞后接受他的东西，再从张乡绅给他的银子里取六两多银子给胡屠户，则可看出范进的虚伪。

《范进中举》选自《儒林外史》，作者吴敬梓（17011754年），字敏轩，一字文木，号粒民，清代小说家，汉族，安徽全椒人。范进是《儒林外史》中的一个特色鲜明的人物。
范进中举前，饱尝了科举制度迫害下落第文人的辛酸苦楚。50多岁仅是个童生，家中穷苦不堪，12月的天气还穿着单衣服，冻得直发抖（原文：广东虽是地气温暖，这时已是十二月上旬，那童生还穿着麻布直裰，冻得乞乞缩缩。）。范进在几十年应试不中的情况下，由于主试官周进的抬举，应试及第。他喜不自胜出现了癫狂状态。（长期的被人蔑视侮辱，二十多次落第的经历把他弄得十分脆弱，无论是巨大的欢乐或悲哀都已经承受不住了。好，几十年的屈辱和痛苦结束了！中了梦寐以求的功名富贵到手了）
